UPDATE: ISU Offense vs. Tech Defense is now up as well.
UPDATE 2: Special Teams is up
This is where defensive coordinators earn their pay and make their reputations. Texas Tech presents the most productive offense in the country, yet I think their are reasons for optimism as ISU squares off in Lubbock. Read the matchup analysis and let me know your comments.

For those who haven't heard, the ISU Athletic Department, along with changing the football uniforms, have decided to drop Cy completely from all uniforms, official gear, and media. Cy will still appear as mascot, but that is the ONLY place he will be seen from now on. The news story is here: http://www.kcci.com/news/14247140/detail.html
A group of Alumni have started an online petition to keep Cy more involved with the identit

ISU's latest commitment Clinton Mann is the final member of the 2008 class. Below is a quote from phog.net from a tourney between his sophomore and junior year and then a current quote from phog again and then yahoo sports.
"On the other side was Mann who is probably the most aggressive of the talented young big men. He attacks the basket, looks to dunk when possible and is already comfortable driving right or left to the hoop from between the free throw and three point lines. The

This is going to be a fun matchup to watch. In many ways I wish I could watch this a football fan, not a Cyclone fan because it will be an interesting matchup to see how it plays out. I could create an argument for this to swing very favorablly and also very unfavorably for our Cyclones. I posted my look at the matchup which you can find in the football group or just follow the link below.

What is different?
Sunday afternoon I sat watched my son play in a flag football game and listened in on the conversations of a couple Cyclone fans in the background. Two things really stood out to me from their conversation and from what I have seen, their conversation has been

The Cyclones really need this game to be over early. The longer Toledo hangs around, the more dangerous they become. This may be the most pivotal game ISU will face going forward in determining the fortures of our season. Click the link below to read the Keys to a Cyclone Victory.

Some big match ups Satruday will take place in special teams. I don't think special teams will be a draw and they hold the potential to be a huge factor in the outcome of the game. Follow the link below to read the analysis of the matchups and let me know your comments.

Gene Chizik-coached defenses in rivalry games have been a sure thing.
As Auburn’s defensive coordinator during 2002-04, the Tigers smothered Alabama three times, holding the Crimson Tide to below their season average in each case.
At Texas, where Chizik served in 2005 and 2006, t

ISU's defense be may, "gasp", underrated. Now before you think I have been drinking too much leftover "koolaid" from Saturday, the ISU defense still has a ways to go and is not yet top division Big 12, but it isn't bad anymore either. This week should be a good experience for our defense with both the road game atmosphere along with an opponet with a mix of young and experienced players I just posted by breakdown of when Toledo has the ball and you can read it by following the link below.

Iowa State receive a commitment from Justin Hamilton a 6' 10"senior from Lone Peak Utah. Here is the kicker, he was playing football, not basketball until he grew to his present height during his sophomore year. Last year he then played mostly JV, but had a huge summer prompting him to be called by some one of the top big 10 men in the West. You never know how guys will develop, but he likes contact under the basket and has played such little ball that he likely has a big upside. A true diamo

Maybe it is the halo of the victory this weekend, but it didn't seem like it was time today already to being the anaysis of the matchups for Saturday. I am started this week with a look at the Cyclone offense vs. the Toledo defense. This may pose a great opportunity for ISU's offense to get on track and gain confidence, but their could be some surprises in store for the Cyclones. Take a read.

I think the most surprising stat of the game is not 5-6 on field goals, or 80 yards rushing for Bass, or 4 sacks by our defense. The most surprising stat to me is that our young offensive line did not give up a single stat to Iowa's experienced and tough defensive line. Iowa had 9 sacks coming in to the game this season and left Jack Trice stadium with zero!
Kudo's to Dedrick, Stephens, Johnson, Schmeling and Lamaak!!!

While I probably should have gotten this up prior to the win Saturday. I finally got my thoughts together and posted in the football group discussion that has been on my mind for awhile. At the risk of sounding like a bandwagoner talking about this so close to a big win, I really like this staff. (I really liked them last week too) Not because of the losses or wins, but because I think the way they are choosing to build this can really be something special, not today, maybe not next season, b

Bret Culbertson “There was a little pressure but I was calm. I went out there with my snapper and my holder and we just did what we do everyday. I was excited on the sideline. When I got out there they iced me and I just relaxed my nerves.” “As the crowd rushed the fi eld, the only thing going through my mind was get the Cy-Hawk trophy. What a great way for Iowa State to get is first win under new coach Gene Chizik. Beating Iowa is always nice, but more important is what this win can do for our team. Gone are any concerns of players not buying in to what the new staff is doing. Gone are any concerns about the psyche of the team. Bret showed us the Bret of old, while Iowa States defense shutdown the Hawkeyes. Sometimes you need a big game to establish an identity for a defense and I think this defense really came together tod

Good article in the sporting news
"Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz hasn't gotten to know Gene Chizik all that well. He doesn't have to, though, to know exactly what Iowa State's new coach is going through.
It seems like ages now, but there was a time when Ferentz couldn't buy a win. Plucked from the NFL in 1998 to replace the legendary Hayden Fry, Ferentz lost 18 of his first 20 games at Iowa...."
