The Good, The Bad, The Future, Part 3 – The Future
After an inauspicious start to the Gene Chizik era with a loss to Kent State, what does the future hold for Cyclone football this year and beyond? While I think its dangerous to read too much into one game, I do think there are some things that we can take away. Overall, I remain just as excited for the future of Cyclone football as I have been throughout the summer.
2007
Shouldn’t be any surprise that 2007 will be a rebuilding year. While the cupboard wasn’t bare for Chizik, key positions lacked talent. For example, no amount of coaching or schemes will create a pass rush when you don’t have the personnel capable of getting up field. For a new coach it isn’t just the talent that you inherit, it is having the right talent for your system. For example, you can’t play a bring-the-house defensive strategy, without having at least one shutdown corner and good physical players across the secondary. You can’t field a wide open attacking passing game without a quarterback who can deliver the ball. Unlike basketball, you don’t turn a program around with one or two recruiting classes, particularly when you start your recruiting in mid December.
This year I expect our team to get better each game as we learn the new system, new expectations, and develop experience. The improvement may not always be readily apparent as we play teams like Texas and Oklahoma, but I will be surprised if we don’t see improvement from this team throughout the year.
Wins & losses is where it is all ultimately measured and I am still sticking with my going in belief that we will win 4-5 games in the inaugural campaign with Coach Chizik.
Beyond
Cyclone fans that have dimmed their expectations for the coming years based on the Kent State game are short sighted. I was thrilled with several things that I saw last Thursday night. Coach McFarland managed to take a new group of offensive lineman and mold them into a surprising effective unit. I heard a head coach after the game not making excuses, and set expectations for himself and the players. I saw a defense that played more physical than recent years and saw a hint of the type of aggressive in your face defense Coach Bolt has in store for us as he brings in the players we need.
This isn’t a one year turn around, and isn’t always going to be pretty, but the future is bright with this staff. Hang in there Cyclone fans. Turnarounds in football are seldom quick. We have the right staff, with a winning philosophy, who do things the right way.
